The top shopping trends of 2022

Our shopping habits have dramatically changed over the past few years and we shouldn’t expect to see this stopping any time soon. Whilst the majority of us used to enjoy a Sunday browse to get our shopping fix, we now turn to Instagram and YouTube to see what our favourite influencers are loving at the moment instead.

If you’re a business owner, you need to keep up to date with the current shopping trends so you can be sure you're offering your products to customers on their preferred shopping platform. Let's get started.

Influencers recommendations matter more than those of friends or family

In 2022, 30% of consumers reported that influencer recommendations are one of the most important factors when they’re deciding if they should purchase something or not. As influencers are considered to be experts in their areas, this does make sense, and for businesses who sell online, this is fantastic news. This means that you don’t need to worry about word-of-mouth marketing as much anymore, and can focus on finding micro influencers to help with your marketing instead.

Phones are the most popular device to use for online shopping

Around 75% of consumers use their phones to shop online, this means if you’re an e-commerce website, it’s vital your website is mobile optimised. If a website is too slow or doesn’t display properly, most people will take their business elsewhere and won't return.

Although Gen Z like to discover products on social media, they still like to shop in stores

Those age 18-24 most often discover and enjoy learning about new products on social media, if your business is targeting this generation, you should focus your efforts on social media rather than paid ads when generating leads. However, 55% of Gen Z said they’d still prefer to purchase the product in store, this is an important thing to note if you have both online and in store options.

Price (obviously) matters when purchasing a product, but the other factors may come as a surprise

No matter what generation your consumer falls into, price is the most important factor when deciding if they should buy a product or not. The quality is also important as well, coming in close second to the price. However, there are a few other things to think about when marketing your brand. Over 50% of Gen Z will consider a product if some of the proceeds go to charity, 55% of Millennials look for good reviews and 55% of Boomers look for unique features and how functional the product is.

Our shopping behaviours are constantly changing, and the more your business can meet these needs, the more likely you are to succeed.
